# Delivery note

What is a delivery note, and why do so many customers want a signed copy before they pay?

Glossary Updated 10 October 2026

Definition

A delivery note (DN) is the document that travels with goods to the customer, listing what was shipped so the receiver can check and sign for it.

## What is a delivery note used for?

A delivery note records items and quantities, usually without prices, with the order reference, vehicle and driver. The customer’s signed copy is proof that the goods arrived, and many B2B customers won’t process an invoice without it. Each partial delivery gets its own delivery note.

Example: a tile supplier dispatches 300 of 500 ordered tiles on Monday with DN 1042 and the remaining 200 on Thursday with DN 1047.

A delivery note isn’t an invoice: it shows quantities, not what is owed. On the buying side, your stores team checks the supplier’s delivery note when recording a [goods received note](https://1flux.ai/glossary/goods-received-note).
